In the field of landscape design, as well as in many branches of our life, changes constantly occur, new trends, preferences and fashion trends arise. It is not surprising that most owners of private houses, cottage and garden plots try to formalize their land holdings with maximum comfort, comfort and aesthetics. In this publication, we will consider an element of landscape design, like pergola. Initially, pergola was used as a support for the distribution of climbing plants, most often grapes. Nowadays this arched structure made of wood (metal, stone and even plastic) is also used as a canopy, gazebo, visor above the entrance door and simply a decorative element of the adjacent territory.
Of what and how to make pergola
When manufacturing pergolas, the following materials can be used:
- wood of different breeds;
- a rock;
- plastic and metal plastic;
- combination of materials.
Unconditional leader among the materials for the execution of such elements of landscape design as a pergola is considered to be wood. Not only naturalness, flexibility and availability of raw materials became the main reasons for the use of natural material, but also high aesthetic qualities of finished products. Designs of wood can easily be combined with any elements of landscape design, structures, plantations. In addition, wood is perfectly combined with other types of raw materials for making original pergolas. For example, the bases of pergolas can be made of stone (in the form of columns), and the crossbeams are made of wood. Or the structure can have wooden supports and a metal grid as overlapping.
When choosing a material, it is necessary to proceed from the compiled (or supposed) image of the site, its stylistic execution and financial investments in the project. So, what kind of tasks can a pergola perform in a suburban area or in the courtyard of a private household:
- the design may be necessary to correct the growth of climbing plants;
- can act solely as a decorative element of landscape design, decorating the image of an infield or backyard;
- with the help of pergolas you can “disguise” the technical structures that are unsuccessfully knocked out of the overall picture of the design (barn, garage, poultry house, etc.);
- with the help of such structures it is possible to zonirovat area;
- with the help of pergolas established for the growth of climbing plants, it is possible to create a kind of “green corridor” from one building (or an important object of landscape design) to another;
- pergola can serve as a place for rest and solitude, because it becomes a source of coolness and shade on the site (gazebos, canopies);
- the pergola set in front of the windows creates a shadow for the southern part of the house or any other structure (canopies, canopies).
If the pergola is designed to support climbing plants, then, on the one hand, the structure should look easy, but on the other – be strong enough, stable and reliable, because the branches of some plants weigh several kilograms.
Pergola – a variety of structures
Pergolas are distinguished not only by the type of material used for construction, but also by the type of construction:
- pergola – the awning. This type of construction is most like a canopy, only instead of a solid roof – a row of rails, beams or a lattice. This design can protect from the sun, but not from the rain. It is installed as a stand-alone structure, and it can be attached to a larger building – a house, a summer kitchen, a veranda, a sauna;
- pergola-screen. Used to create a shaded place for privacy. The design can be used as a zoning element;
- pergola-visor. From southern countries, this trend has come to us – an adaptation that helps create a shadow near the windows of the south side of the building;
- pergola-corridor. Typically, the design is used to create a green tunnel – climbing plants create an excellent shadow, relying on the elements of pergola.
All the constructions of pergolas can be conditionally divided into two large groups:
- separate buildings (standing apart from buildings);
- the adjacent buildings (most often part of a house, veranda or other buildings).
When choosing the pergola design, it is important to correctly determine the size. Too large a building on a small country cottage or a private plot will look ridiculous, too high – to create little shade, and too small can not withstand the weight of climbing plants. But everything depends not only on the size of the land or yard, but also on the scale of other structures participating in the landscape ensemble – from the main building to the swing or alpine slide.
Pergolas can be square and rectangular, arched or inclined overlapping. The choice of form depends on your personal preferences and the performance of other elements of landscape design, the size of the pergola itself and the building to which it can be attached, unless it is an isolated structure.
Arched pergolas are more complicated and expensive in terms of manufacturing, but their appearance compensates for any costs. After all, the first constructions of this type of landscape structures initially looked like. Graceful bent overlapping will decorate even the most ordinary design, giving the entire ensemble a touch of unobtrusive luxury, elegance and status.
Where to install pergola
The place for the installation of the pergola is determined, first of all, by its functional load. It is necessary to decide whether the design will be part of the decorative component, whether it will be a support for climbing plants or will create a shadow as a canopy, a gazebo, a “green corridor”. Also, the place for installing pergolas is affected not only by the size of the land plot (yard), but also by its layout.
One of the most common options for installing pergolas as a stand-alone structure is associated with the organization of a place for meals in the open air. Agree that it would be strange to have your yard or suburban area and not be able to gather for the whole family for lunch or dinner outdoors. Of course, pergola will not protect your dining table from rain, but from the scorching sun will save.
No less common variant of pergola mounting is the fitting of the structure to the main or secondary building. Most often the pergola acts as a canopy or large visor, which is the continuation of the house (less often – the summer kitchen). With this arrangement, you can organize a place for meals or a recreation area directly near the house, which simplifies traffic and is ideal for households with small land plots or backyards.
Pergola may not be part of the house, not to be its continuation, but to be in close proximity, for example, on a wooden platform attached to the main building. For many homeowners, this option of organizing a place for relaxation, meals and barbecue is most convenient in terms of planning and moving between functional areas.
A place for barbecue and other options for cooking on fire is the pride of any homeowner with a plot. The possibility of cooking a meal in the open air is no less fun than its absorption. For the organization of shading and partial shelter of the barbecue area, the pergola can also be an excellent component of landscape design. Pergola will look great both in the company of a compact brazier and a large outdoor oven.
The pool area needs shading. Even under a small pergola with ease fit garden furniture for relaxation – beds or beds, armchairs or a small sofa. You can rest by the pool without fear of getting a sunstroke. But the space under the pergola will be fully ventilated, which can not be said about gazebos.
In the villa area pergola can be used as a zoning element, separating the flower beds from the work area. If it is necessary to plant plants that like a shadow, then the pergola can be used as a construction for shading the site. You can also designate and hide from the sun a playground, swings or horizontal bars. Similar techniques can be applied even within the small backyard of urban private households.
Pergola can be part of a balcony on the second floor of a private home ownership. If the balcony is located on the south side of the building, then most of the day the sun will mercilessly shine not only in the recreation area, but also in rooms through which you can go to the open terrace of the upper floor. Some shading of the balcony and windows will provide an easy, yet durable construction of the pergola. Its style of execution and color solution should coincide with the general palette of the facade of the building.
Choosing a color solution
The choice of color for pergola performance is influenced by the general picture of landscape design and color solutions used to make other elements of landscape design (the main building and additional buildings). It is important to determine whether you want your pergola to stand out against the general background of the adjacent territory, is a kind of accent or it must fit organically into the image of the site, sharing a common color scheme.
The majority of variants of execution of any landscape constructions from a tree are connected with use of its beautiful natural drawing. After all, what could be better and more beautiful than the natural color of wood? In particular, if other elements of structures and structures are made of a similar material. Of course, the structures of wood do not remain untreated – they are covered with special antiseptics and varnishes, which prevent rotting and dampening of the material.
Snow-white execution of the pergola looks luxurious against the background of bright green of trees and bushes, lawns and flower beds. The bright and clean image created by the white surfaces of the structures (including the pergola in the center of attention) will give a festive, solemn, elegant appearance to the entire landscape design of the site.
Choosing a color solution for pergolas, you can stop and the combination of colors and textures. If your design is made of different materials (wood + metal or stone + wood), then it will be logical to use different color solutions for each type of raw materials. Experts recommend using no more than two options. For example, snow-white columns are perfectly combined with any color of wood on the crossbeams and beams. And dark metal supports are perfectly combined with wood of bright shades.
The contrasting choice of colors (black, dark gray, dark chocolate color) is perfect for distinguishing the design on the general background of the site. Particularly spectacularly dark pergola will look in the company of garden furniture of a similar shade. Or you can combine a contrasting dark tone with the color of the fence, low fences or curbs on the flower beds, part of the facade of the main building (rain plum, visor over the porch, steps or the front door).
